**Lecture – “Successful Approaches to Counterinsurgency”

April 16, 2015 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The Wesleyan International Relations Association and the Adelphic Educational Fund present:

“SUCCESSFUL APPROACHES TO COUNTERINSURGENCY”
Guest Speakers Professor William Rose and Chris Chen

Professor William Rose of Connecticut College will speak on the concept of counterinsurgency, and will discuss how approaches to countering an insurgency exist on a spectrum from enemy-centric to population-centric. Professor Rose’s analysis is built on scholarship and detailed case studies of all 71 insurgencies begun and completed from 1944-2010. His lecture will address how this research has led to robust findings about the most important conditions favoring success in a counterinsurgency. These conditions are not only considered to be “best practices,” but are also attentive to favorable context conditions that may or may not be present in particular instances. In this talk, Professor Rose will analyze and draw conclusions about what we can learn from existing evidence on counterinsurgency.

Chris Chen a senior at Connecticut College with a major in Arabic studies and a minor in Film will apply the analytical framework presented by Professor Rose to the contemporary French counterinsurgency in Mali.

Thai food from Typhoon will be served.
