SUMMARY:2016 National Society Convention
DESCRIPTION:The 2016 Convention will be hosted by the Bowdoin Graduate Chapter in Brunswick\, ME. \nThe Convention is the supreme legislative power of the Society. During business sessions\, we discuss current and future Society projects and participate in educational presentations. All Society members are invited to share their views. \nA Convention weekend is also among the Society’s largest coordinated multi-chapter reunions. The weekend includes singing\, storytelling\, and socializing with generations of Alpha Delts from all of our chapters and affiliates. \nIn addition to business sessions\, educational activities\, meals\, and other festivities\, a highlight of the Convention weekend is the traditional Saturday Night Convention Banquet. The banquet features an awards ceremony\, during which we announce our Society Order of the Sword and Spear winner: the highest honor the Society can bestow on an undergraduate member. The banquet also honors the winners of prizes from the Samuel Eells Literary and Educational Foundation Literary Competition. \nWe encourage members to join us for a weekend of networking\, singing\, and sharing in formal and informal discussions about events\, competitions\, ideas\, and how we can continue to improve what the Society offers to graduate and undergraduate members.

SUMMARY:**Queer/Art/Poetics: A Conference on the Art of Queer Theory
DESCRIPTION:See this link for the full conference schedule \nWhat does theory do when it takes queer art seriously? How does queer theory remain artful while unpacking the objects\, strategies and politics of queer aesthetics? Queer/Art/Poetics makes a claim for the centrality of aesthetic form and formal practices to the work of queer theorizing. Art in our conference title refers not only to the objects and performances toward which theorists are drawn\, but also to the pleasurable\, urgent\, onerous\, and productively messy exercise of interpretive skill. Poetics\, aurally and textually flickering with politics\, gestures both toward literal art production and the art of queer theorizing as creative sites reciprocally vitalized by new objects\, questions\, and movements. Rather than wedding our central terms into a seamless whole\, we propose Queer/Art/Poetics\, disjunctive backslashes and all\, as a generative hermeneutics. We suggest that queer theory’s ongoing investment in questions of the political might be enriched by guiding its attention away from state and legal apparatuses and towards queer cultural and aesthetic forms where the political is imagined as a transformative poetics of co-habitation. \nSponsored by the Center for the Humanities\nCo-sponsored by Alpha Delta Phi\, Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life\, English\, FGSS\, Office of Equity and Inclusion\, American Studies & Theater

SUMMARY:**Lecture - "Successful Approaches to Counterinsurgency"
DESCRIPTION:The Wesleyan International Relations Association and the Adelphic Educational Fund present: \n“SUCCESSFUL APPROACHES TO COUNTERINSURGENCY”\nGuest Speakers Professor William Rose and Chris Chen \nProfessor William Rose of Connecticut College will speak on the concept of counterinsurgency\, and will discuss how approaches to countering an insurgency exist on a spectrum from enemy-centric to population-centric. Professor Rose’s analysis is built on scholarship and detailed case studies of all 71 insurgencies begun and completed from 1944-2010. His lecture will address how this research has led to robust findings about the most important conditions favoring success in a counterinsurgency. These conditions are not only considered to be “best practices\,” but are also attentive to favorable context conditions that may or may not be present in particular instances. In this talk\, Professor Rose will analyze and draw conclusions about what we can learn from existing evidence on counterinsurgency. \nChris Chen a senior at Connecticut College with a major in Arabic studies and a minor in Film will apply the analytical framework presented by Professor Rose to the contemporary French counterinsurgency in Mali. \nThai food from Typhoon will be served.
